About the Earthware Service

Earthware’s aim is to keep single-use takeout containers out of landfills. We want our members to enjoy the convenience of restaurant takeout while also reducing their carbon footprint. This is how it works:

  1. Sign up as an Earthware member.
  2. Ordering directly for pick up – let the restaurant know you want your order packed in Earthware and give them your member code (your initials followed by the last 4 digits of your phone number)
  3. Ordering via app or online – choose the Earthware menu item and enter your member code in the additional/extra information field.
  4. Enjoy your meal.
  5. Please lightly rinse the container.
  6. Scan the QR code on the Earthware container to schedule a pick up or drop off container depending on your membership level.
  7. For pick up, leave the containers on your doorstep or in your lobby on pick up day.
  8. Containers are collected, washed, sanitized according to Alberta Health Services regulations.
  9. Containers are redistributed to participating restaurants.

Your initials followed by the last 4 digits of your phone number.

The way you order from one of our restaurants does not change.  The only difference is that you need to let them know you are an Earthware member.

  1. Ordering directly for pick up – let the restaurant know you want your order packed in Earthware and give them your member code (your initials followed by the last 4 digits of your phone number)
  2. Ordering via app or online – choose the Earthware menu item and enter your member code in the additional/extra information field.

Up to 20 days after you receive them.  We will remind you often to return them but if you do wish to keep them we will charge you $25.

There are three membership levels for Earthware:

  1. Drop-off: Not yet available.
  2. Neighbourhood pick up:  We are in your neighborhood approximately twice per month.  Please schedule us if you would like to have us drop by your house.  We will remind you to put out your Earthware via text the night before pick up. Not yet available.
  3. Next day pick up: Schedule us to come by tomorrow.  We will remind you to put out your Earthware via text the night before pick up.

Yes please, they will need a quick rinse to remove food and liquid. We’ll take care of the rest!

If you would like to encourage a restaurant to participate in this sustainable initiative, please tell them about us and direct them to our website.  You can also suggest them to us from our contact page.  We will reach out to them right away.  More restaurants equals less waste.

Restaurants want to offer the most convenient takeout service possible for their customers and some of those customers may choose not to participate in the reduction of single-use waste. Also, some meals do not lend themselves to Earthware containers like pizza.

We are piloting this initiative in Calgary and will be expanding across Canada in the near future. If you would like to know when Earthware is coming to your city, please contact us by clicking here.

About The Containers

Before your Earthware reaches any restaurant they are commercially sanitised and thoroughly inspected. Our sanitisation standards far exceed government regulations and are more stringent than restaurant dishwashing. You can trust that your Earthware is clean, safe and looks like new.

Please don’t. If you need to reheat or freeze your takeout, please use your own dishes.

Earthware reusable containers are made of reusable and recyclable #5 polypropylene. They are 100% BPA (bisphenol) free and are NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certified, which means the containers are manufactured using only FDA approved raw materials.

Based on SGS testing in an international testing lab conducted between Dec 25th, 2020 and Jan 7, 2021 our containers did not contain any amount of short or long chain PFA’s including PFOA’s and PFOS’s.

On the other hand, single-use takeout containers are filled with these very harmful chemicals.

Earthware reusable containers have an estimated 1,000 use lifespan, after which they are retired and turned into other useful plastic products. We guarantee that they are 100% recycled by our contracted recycling partner.

Only about 9% of  plastic that we put in our recycling bins actually gets recycled. On the positive side that is 9% of stuff that would not have been recycled at all but it is still a slim number and most of it is single-use containers.

Single-use takeout containers and cutlery marked as compostable simply are not. If you look closely, many containers say it takes at least 90 days to commercially compost them. Canadian cities that have composting solutions typically work on a 21 day system and thus cannot compost any takeout containers. They end up in landfills.
